A wiley bunch indeed! I guess I’d still go w/ Bruce Springsteen (esp. c’ ’75-’83 w/ some resurgent peaks like The Ghost of Tom Joad) for pure American inspiration. Tom Petty (at his best) and the Allman Bros. (current lineup as well as around ’71 – including their seminal Live at The Fillmore recording) also come to mind as American musicians/groups that can inspire.
    Maybe John Adams for classical.
Nice Chet Baker discussion; I still think the best CB bio is Chet Baker: his life and music by Jeroen de Valk. Haunting and well researched. Glad Main has a copy!
